The Reverend Ada Yuk-Ying Wong Nagata was born and raised in Hong Kong and migrated to the United States in 1983. She received her Diploma in Nursing from Nethersole School of Nursing of Hong Kong, numerous nursing certificates from the United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from California State University, Dominguez Hills. She has been a Registered Nurse since 1976.
Before serving as Priest-in-Charge of Church of Our Savior, Manhattan, Diocese of New York, The Reverend Wong Nagata helped to establish St. Francis’ Fellowship in 1998, a forming Chinese-language congregation then, the second Chinese-language Episcopal congregation in Diocese of Los Angeles. She then facilitated to merge this fellowship at the advice of the Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. J. Jon Bruno, with St. Thomas’ Church, Hacienda Heights in 2001 to form a multi-cultural congregation. After serving as an active lay leader, she answered the call to ordained ministry. She received a joint Masters of Divinity Degree from the Episcopal Theological School at Claremont and the Claremont School of Theology in 2007. She was ordained a Deacon (transitional) on June 9th the same year and a Priest in January 2008.
The Reverend Wong Nagata was called to join Church of Our Saviour (COS), San Gabriel to start a Chinese congregation in the San Gabriel area. She started her ministry at COS in July 2009 and resigned from her nursing position to serve the Lord full time. After joining COS, she has been active in the community and established a Chinese-speaking (predominantly Cantonese speaking) congregation. Later she facilitated the joining of another Mandarin-language congregation to form a Mandarin congregation at COS and helped established Li Tim-Oi Center, a Chinese Ministry Center of The Episcopal Church, which is in the process of expanding to an Asian Center. During her time at COS, she served as Associate for Asian Ministry and Associate Rector. While in the Diocese of Los Angeles, The Reverend Wong Nagata served in numerous diocesan committees and a member of the Bishop-suffragan search committee in 2008-2009, and Bishop-coadjutor search committee in 2015-2016. She also served as Convener of Episcopal Asiamerican Ministries (EAM) Chinese Convocation for seven years from 2009-2016.
The Reverend Wong Nagata earned her Doctor of Ministry degree at Episcopal Divinity School, Massachusetts on Asian American Studies in 2015. The Rev. Wong Nagata is a mentor of Education for Ministry, a distance learning program by Sewanee, The University of the South; and an instructor of Li Tim-Oi Institute’s Lay Leadership Training Course. She was named an Honorary Canon of the Cathedral Center of Saint Paul, Diocese of Los Angeles in 2016.
The Reverend Wong Nagata speaks fluent Chinese, English and conversational Mandarin and is married to Ronnie Nagata. They have a son, Jason, who is a pediatrician in N. California.
